Un elettrone che effettua una transizione tra due orbite emette un fotone pari alla differenza di energia fra i due livelli. Bahasa Melayu: Model Bohr dari atom hidrogen menggambarkan elektron-elektron bermuatan negatif mengorbit pada kulit atom dalam lintasan tertentu mengelilingi inti atom yang bermuatan positif. Ketika elektron meloncat dari satu orbit ke orbit lainnya selalu disertai dengan pemancaran atau penyerapan sejumlah energi elektromagnetik hf.
