EN: Information about the picture

  • Title: Red Cross Memorial Stone at Dybbøl, Denmark
  • Picture: taken by Arne List, April 18, 2004 (noontime)
  • Description: Memorial stone commemorating the first use of the Red Cross symbol in an armed conflict during the Battle of Dybbøl (Denmark) in 1864; jointly erected on August 22, 1989, the anniversary of the first Geneva Convention of 1864, by the national Red Cross societies of Denmark and Germany. The picture was taken on April 18, 2004, the 140th anniversary of the battle, when delegations from both societies came together for a commemorative meeting. The members of both delegations wore their usual Red Cross clothes which looked nearly the same except for the different national designations. The atmosphere of the meeting between both groups was very cordial and open-hearted.
The translation of the inscription, in Danish and in German, is: "Dr. Appia / Kpt. van de Velde / 1864 / In memory of the first Red Cross delegates in history / Danish Red Cross / German Red Cross / August 22, 1989."
