Description
English: Dutch School, 17th Century. A dodo with inscription 'Dronte'. Traces of black chalk, watercolour, gum arabic, brown wash framing lines. 10¼ x 8 3/8 in. (26 x 21 cm.) The inscription on this drawing, 'Dronte', was the Dutch 17th-century name for the dodo, although at this period it was also used in a number of other languages including French and Italian.
