Fildes was illustrating "Edwin Drood" at the time of Charles Dickens' death. The watercolor shows Dickens' empty chair in his study. Vincent van Gogh, who had acquired all 212 volumes of "The Graphic" between 1870 and 1880, greatly admired the engraving (Sweetman, p.153).
