DescriptionNorthern Pacific Railway Lillian Russell 1915.JPG |
Postcard depiction of actress Lillian Russell who had taken a trip on the Northern Pacific Railway and wrote a letter to the superintendent of its dining car service praising the service she received. Russell is depicted against a worker with many sacks of potatoes which would be used for the railway's dining cars. The potatoes shown at the top were the railroad's "Great Big Baked Potatoes", while the others were potatoes commonly available on the market at the time. Someone else who apparently intended to send the card and whose trip seemed to be not as happy, wrote "This is Bunk" on it.
In the photo, one sees the size and appearance of the Netted Gem Baker potatoes ("The Great Big Baked Potato") and a visual comparison of the potatoes against those normally found on the market.
