English: Bronze statuette of a veiled and masked dancer. Greek 2rd - 2nd century B. C. Said to be from to Alexandria, Egypt. Bequest of Walter C. Baker, 1971 (1972.118.95).


The complex motion of this dancer is conveyed exclusively throug the interaction of the body with several layers of dress. Over an undergarment that falls in deep flods and trails heavily, the figure wears a lightweight mantle, drawn tautly over her head and body by the pressuee applied to it by her right arm, left hand, and right leg. Its substance is conveyed by the alternation of the tubular folds pushing trhough fron bellow and the freely curling softness of the fringe. The woman's face is covered by the shereest of veils, discernible at its edge below her hairline and at the cutouts for the eyes. Her extended right foot shows a laced slipper. This dancer has been convincingly identified as one professional entertainers, a combination of mime and dancer, for which the cosmopolitan city of Alexandria was famous in antiquity.

La complejidad de los movimientos de la bailarina se transmite exclusivamente mediante la interacción del cuerpo con varias capas de su atuendo. Sobre la prenda interior que cae en profundos pliegues y cuelga pesadamente, la figura viste un manto liviano, estirado tensamente sobre su cabeza y cuerpo por la presión que aplican el brazo derecho, la mano izquierda y la pierna derecha. Su solidez se transmite a través de la interacción de los pliegues tubulares que surgen desde abajo y la suave sinuosidad de los bordes.
