== Summary == UK number plates on vehicles built prior to 1973 may be black with white or silver letters. Note there was a regulation change regarding this matter in 2001: Previously only vehicles registered before 1st January 1973 were permitted to carry black plates. The rule was modified to coincide with tax exemption which is granted on vehicles built (but not necessarily registered) before 1st January 1973. For this reason a small number of vehicles, including the Hillman_Avenger from which this picture was taken, are now permitted to carry black plates where they were had not been for over 20 years. |
