Summary
Description |
English: Landscape image; Location: Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park; view is south-to-north from near the southern edge of the playa. The Grandstand is visible on the horizon a little to the right of the centre of the image. Note the track through the dried mud behind the boulder. These tracks are left when winter storms dampen the surface of the playa, which consists of extremely fine grained clay that becomes very slippery when wet, and also produce wind speeds high enough to break the rock loose and push it along. The rocks originate in the mountains surrounding the racetrack, and there are several hundred scattered around the playa. The average size of the rocks that leave these tracks is 50kg.
