Applicants may need to pay for their own safety vest, hard hat, and work clothes. They must also join the Operating Engineers Union and pay the association dues.
A waiver of the diploma or GED may be granted to applicants who show proof of two or more years of work in the construction industry.

Applicants must also complete a math and reading exam and pass a drug test.
Other admissions information
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, be able to speak and write English, be physically and mentally able to perform the work of the trade, and have a valid driver's license. Applicants who wish to transfer from another local must be approved by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.
