Cardiac muscle
Cardiac muscle is striated, similar to skeletal muscle, but beats involuntarily. The cells beat in unison as a result of unique gap junctions between the muscle cells.
This illustration shows a closeup, color photo of a cardiac muscle, with a detailed closeup of the striations. The striation detail shows the unique gap junctions between the muscle cells that create the coordinated rhythm of the heart beat.
