A diagram of homeostatic controls. When external factors like cold affect the body, the hypothalamus responds by causing vasoconstriction and shivering in order to warm the body. As long as the external factors persist, so will the internal cycle of warming. Once the body is too hot relative to external factors, the hypothalamus will cause vasodilation and diaphoresis to cool the body. The body takes in feedback from outside it to "decide" whether to cool itself or heat itself.
