The course runs nine months to a year long and covers all of the equipment, exercises (over 500), and systems developed by Joseph Pilates. In addition to the Pilates system, the curriculum includes creating specialized programs for different client needs and instruction in anatomy, safety, equipment maintenance, client/trainer dynamics, and studio operation.

Applicants must be competent with Pilates mat and reformer at an advanced intermediate level and be familiar with other apparatus. Applicants must also have a minimum of 80 personal exercise sessions with approved instructors or studios. The required personal interview determines the applicant's aptitude, potential, and likelihood of completion.
Passing all required tests, attending at least 85% of the weekly classes between the beginning of the program and graduation; attending and participating in all seminars; and success in teaching student clients and personal workouts that are performed on a consistent and frequent basis.
