Graphs: The Coordinate Plane
Lesson Objective
This lesson shows you the basic parts of the Coordinate plane.
Why Learn This?
This plane is one of the most important idea behind graphs. A lot of mathematical ideas are created using this plane.
This also means that if you are taking up math, you definitely will come across it.
Study Tips
Tips #1
These are the parts of the plane you should remember:
Horizontal axis (also called x-axis)
Vertical axis (also called y-axis)
The point of Origin
Quadrants
So, where are these parts located in the plane? Watch the video below to find out.

00:00:00.020 This video introduces you to the parts of the coordinate plane. It is important for you to remember these parts. 00:00:08.120 Before I begin, it good to know that, this plane was developed by this French mathematician a long time ago. 00:00:18.200 Now, let's take a look. This number line is the x-axis. Also known as horizontal axis. The number line over here is the y-axis. Also known as vertical axis. Okay, now look at the center. 00:00:43.090 This point is called the point of origin. If you look carefully, the x-axis and y-axis divide the plane into 4 parts. 00:00:52.160 Each part is called a quadrant. Also, these parts are labeled, Quadrant 1, Quadrant 2, Quadrant 3 and Quadrant 4 respectively. 00:01:05.120 Okay, that is all for now. We will go through on how to use this plane in the next lesson.
