Babylonia under Hammurabi
The extent of the Babylonian Empire at the start and end of Hammurabi's reign.
At the beginning of Hammurabi's reign, the Babylonian empire was concentrated in the area immediately surrounding Babylon, which was located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in modern-day Hillah, Iraq, about 53 miles south of Baghdad. At the end of Hamurrabi's reign, the Babylonian empire had extended south to the Persian Gulf and north along the Euphrates to Mari, which was located in modern-day Abu Kamal, Syria, near the Syria/Iraq border.
