Presidential election of 1796
This map illustrates the 1796 presidential election results, with presidential electoral votes by state. The majority of votes for Jefferson came from the southern states and Pennsylvania, while the majority of votes for Adams came from the northern states.
Jefferson received a total of 68 electoral votes: 14 from Pennsylvania, 20 from Virginia, 4 from Maryland, 4 from Kentucky, 11 from North Carolina, 3 from Tennessee, 8 from South Carolina, and 4 from Georgia. Adams received a total of 71 Electoral Votes: 6 from New Hampshire, 4 from Vermont, 16 from Massachusetts, 4 from Rhode Island, 9 from Connecticut, 12 from New York, 7 from New Jersey, 3 from Delaware, 7 from Maryland, 1 from Virginia, and 1 from North Carolina.
