clitoris
Physiology
Biology
Examples of clitoris in the following topics:
-
Vulva
- The clitoris is located at the front of the vulva where the labia minora meet.
- The visible portion of the clitoris is the clitoral glans, roughly the size and shape of a pea.
- The point where the labia minora attach to the clitoris is called the frenulum clitoridis.
- A prepuce, the clitoral hood, normally covers and protects the clitoris; however, in women with particularly large clitorises or small prepuces, the clitoris may be partially or wholly exposed.
- The urethral opening (meatus) is located below the clitoris and just in front of the vagina.
-
Female Sexual Response
- For women, these changes include increased blood flow to the nipples, vulva, clitoris, and vaginal walls, and increased vaginal lubrication.
- Further stimulation can lead to more vaginal wetness and further engorgement and swelling of the clitoris and the labia, along with increased redness or darkening of the skin in these areas.
-
Anatomy of the Female Reproductive System
- These parts are internal; the vagina meets the external organs at the vulva, which includes the labia, clitoris, and urethra.
- The external components include the mons pubis, pudendal cleft, labia majora, labia minora, Bartholin's glands, and clitoris.
-
Penis
- The various parts of the male penis are homologous to parts of the female clitoris:
- This diagram compares the structure of the penis to the clitoris.
-
Female Reproductive Anatomy
- Among the external structures are the vulva, which consists of the mons pubis, clitoris, labia majora, labia minora, and the vestibular glands.
- The clitoris is a structure with erectile tissue that contains a large number of sensory nerves and serves as a source of stimulation during intercourse.
- Several structures are on the outside of the body, such as the labia, vulva, and clitoris, while others, such as the ovaries and uterus, are internal.
-
Circumcision
- Circumcision is the surgical removal of either the foreskin in males, or the clitoris and labia in females.
-
Genital Herpes
- In females, lesions appear on or near the pubis, labia, clitoris, vulva, buttocks or anus.
-
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
- The extra androgen does not affect a baby boy's physical development, but in baby girls it can enlarge the clitoris so that it resembles a penis.
-
Thermoreception
- They are also found in the penis and the clitoris; hence, the name of genital corpuscles.
-
Sexual Violence
- Female circumcision/FGM is a practice used in many parts of Africa in which parts of the female's vagina, usually the clitoris, are removed in order to decrease sexual pleasure.
